Songs Like Teardrop by Massive Attack
By Dan Cohen · Published 2026-06-02
Three numbers frame Teardrop: an intensity of 40 out of 100, a dynamic range of 7, and 70 beats per minute. The texture is layered, the vocal soft, the shifts only mild. Its three mood tags — intimate, melancholy, transcendent — are the reason its neighbourhood is stranger and wider than most.
Eight songs in the same measured band
- So You Are Tired — Sufjan Stevens. Intensity 40, dynamic range 7, 70 BPM. Identical on all three, and shares melancholy and transcendent.
- Untitled #1 (Vaka) — Sigur Rós. Intensity 40, dynamic range 7, 70 BPM. Also identical on all three.
- Ágætis Byrjun — Sigur Rós. Intensity 40, dynamic range 7, 65 BPM.
- Change (In the House of Flies) — Deftones. Intensity 41, dynamic range 7, 75 BPM. A metal-adjacent band one point from Massive Attack.
- Karma Police — Radiohead. Intensity 41, dynamic range 7, 77 BPM.
- Simple Twist of Fate — Bob Dylan. Intensity 41, dynamic range 7, 78 BPM, and shares intimate and melancholy.
- The End of All Things — Howard Shore. Intensity 40, dynamic range 7, 65 BPM, transcendent.
- Wesendonck Lieder — Richard Wagner. Intensity 40, dynamic range 7, 60 BPM.
Why the list drifts toward orchestral music
Teardrop sits at a slow tempo with a wide dynamic range and a voice that never pushes. Very little pop is built that way; a great deal of orchestral and liturgical music is. Several further classical works came back as close numerical neighbours and were excluded from this list because they share none of Teardrop’s mood tags — proximity on the numbers alone was not enough to earn a place here.
Teardrop appears on Massive Attack’s 1998 album Mezzanine. The explanation for the orchestral drift is our interpretation of the measurements, presented as such. Figures are our own measurements, read from the public API at build time. The genre and era spread is a consequence of measuring sound rather than style — it is not a claim that these artists resemble each other in any other way. No lyrics are reproduced.
