Songs Like Pyramid Song by Radiohead, by the Numbers

People file Pyramid Song under difficult. Our measurements disagree, and the disagreement is the interesting part. It reads intensity 42/100, dynamic range 7/10, 87 BPM, soft vocals, complex texture — and, notably, no sudden changes at all. Its mood tags are contemplative and tranquil.
Disorienting is not the same as jarring
The famous thing about this song is its rhythm, which listeners commonly describe as hard to count. But rhythmic ambiguity and abruptness are different properties, and only the second one is what makes music feel unsafe to a listener who needs predictability. Pyramid Song never lurches. That is why it can measure tranquil while sounding strange — an interpretation on our part, but one the numbers support.
What measures like it
- Tom’s Diner — Suzanne Vega. Intensity 36, six points gentler, dynamic range 5, 100 BPM. The nearest thing to it in the contemplative band that is also famously spare.
- I Drink Wine — Adele. Intensity 47, dynamic range 7, 80 BPM. Five points more intense, identical dynamic range.
- Death Letter Blues — Son House. Intensity 47, dynamic range 7, 80 BPM.
- Chimes of Freedom — Bob Dylan. Intensity 48, dynamic range 7, 90 BPM — closest on tempo.
- I Stay Away — Alice in Chains. Intensity 48, dynamic range 7, 90 BPM. A grunge-era track that measures as a contemplative one.
Each of these registers mild sudden changes where Pyramid Song registers none, so all five move a little more abruptly than the seed. That is the one dimension on which nothing in our catalogue currently matches it exactly.
Pyramid Song appears on Radiohead’s 2001 album Amnesiac. The reading of rhythmic ambiguity as distinct from abruptness is our interpretation, presented as such. Figures are our own measurements, read from the public API at build time. The genre and era spread is a consequence of measuring sound rather than style — it is not a claim that these artists resemble each other in any other way. No lyrics are reproduced.
