Songs Like Black by Pearl Jam — Measured, Not Guessed
By Dan Cohen · Published 2026-09-05
Black was never released as a single, and it is still the Pearl Jam song people ask about most. On our scale it reads intensity 47/100, dynamic range 7/10, 75 BPM, with only mild sudden changes, a complex texture and soft vocals. We tag its mood cathartic and melancholy.
Why dynamic range 7 is the number that matters here
A 7 means the song travels a long way between its quietest and loudest points — but the mild sudden-changes reading says it never jolts you to get there. That combination is rare, and it is what makes Black feel like it is slowly opening rather than detonating. When we look for songs that feel like this one, that pairing is what we match on, not the guitar tone.
The songs that land in the same band
- Death Letter Blues — Son House. Intensity 47, identical to Black, same dynamic range of 7, a touch quicker at 80 BPM. A 1960s Delta blues recording measuring exactly like a 1991 Seattle rock song.
- Under the Bridge — Red Hot Chili Peppers. Intensity 48, dynamic range 7, 85 BPM. One point away, and it shares the melancholy tag.
- Fear. — Kendrick Lamar. Intensity 48, dynamic range 7, 85 BPM. Same measured shape, an entirely different tradition.
- Nterini — Fatoumata Diawara. Intensity 48, dynamic range 7, 90 BPM — and the only match here that shares both of Black's mood tags.
- No Me Pidas Perdón — Banda MS. Intensity 44, dynamic range 6. Slightly gentler on both counts, and cathartic in the same way.
One honest outlier
Ain’t No Sunshine by Bill Withers shares the dynamic range (7), nearly the tempo (74 BPM) and the melancholy tag — but it measures 60, thirteen points more intense than Black. We are including it because it is close on everything except force. Go in knowing it pushes harder.
Black appears on Pearl Jam’s 1991 album Ten and was not issued as a commercial single. Figures are our own measurements, read from the public API at build time. The genre and era spread is a consequence of measuring sound rather than style — it is not a claim that these artists resemble each other in any other way. No lyrics are reproduced.
