Songs Like Archangel by Burial

Archangel reads intensity 84, dynamic range 8, 135 BPM, complex texture, frequent sudden changes. Three mood tags: cathartic, heavy, melancholy. Nothing about those figures says “South London dubstep” — and the records that share them say it even less.

It’s All Coming Back to Me Now — Celine Dion. Intensity 83, dynamic range 9, 82 BPM, frequent shifts, and the only record here carrying all three of the seed’s tags. Both are built the same way: huge dynamic swings, abrupt movement, and a vocal that sounds like it is being pulled out of someone. One does it with an orchestra, the other with a pitched-up two-second sample.

Why this list looks so wrong and is so right

Burial’s reputation is for restraint — crackle, space, rain. The measurements disagree, and they are measuring something specific: how far the track travels and how abruptly it moves. On those terms it behaves like a power ballad. That is a claim about physics, not about intent, and it is the kind of neighbour you only find by ignoring genre entirely.

Archangel appears on Burial’s 2007 album Untrue. The characterisation of its reputation is our own framing, presented as such. Figures are our own measurements, read from the public API at build time. The genre and era spread is a consequence of measuring sound rather than style — it is not a claim that these artists resemble each other in any other way. No lyrics are reproduced.
